Lay Leadership

Lay Leadership

Lay leadership – that is, having non-ordained members of the congregation involved in leadership – is a hallmark of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This is true in worship, just as it is in decision-making and planning. Lay leaders participate in all aspects of worship, including song leading, scripture reading, prayers, serving at the Table, and occasionally even giving the sermon.

Some of these positions, called Deacons and Elders, are leaders elected each year by the congregation. The Deacons receive the offering and serve communion. They are also the ones who prepare the Table for worship and do other vital behind-the-scenes jobs. The Elders open worship with prayer and lead prayers for the offering and communion. They are also responsible, alongside the Pastor, for the spiritual wellbeing of the congregation.

Other worship roles are open to everyone, such as greeting people when they arrive, reading the first scripture lesson, or singing in the Choir. And our service couldn’t happen without our tech volunteers running AV and Zoom. If you’d like to learn more about any of these roles, please be in touch with Pastor Rebecca.
