DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE – A Christmas Prayer
Spirit of God, that sings across the heavens and in the hearts of all people, come to us now, in the candlelight, in the music, in the Word that even now takes on flesh. Ignite a spark of hope within us, hope that the brokenness of our lives, of our world, will be made whole. Grant us your peace, a peace that surpasses our understanding. Open our hearts to the Christ who comes into our midst, that we might be filled with joy. Feed us here, on your love, that we might be yours.
God of all gifts, we thank you! For this baby, for this story, for this special night when we have gathered together to remember your love. We praise your name, for you have shown us a great mystery, the Word made flesh, love incarnate, your divine presence in human form. We give you thanks and praise for this wondrous gift given in such an ordinary sort of way.
Humble us, O God, that we might be like the shepherds, eager and surprised by joy, open to the unexpected good news, running toward the Christ Child as if on angels’ wings. Enlighten us with true wisdom, O God, like the magi, that we might continue on the journey until we reach the feet of your Christ, that we also might sacrifice what is earthly to gain what is lasting.
Come to us in this season of celebration, that we might know your way, that we might follow the path you have placed in front of us, answering with Mary’s willing heart, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord.” Give us courage and strengthen us, as you did Joseph, to do your will, even when it does not match what the world would have us do.
Let us taste your peace, O Lord, in the quiet moments here, that we might long for it so deeply our lives will be transformed. For even as the angels sing, even as the Scriptures proclaim, Jesus your Christ is Lord and no other. Love will take the day and nothing else. Light will shine out in the darkness and the darkness will not overcome it! For this gift we give you thanks, praying in the name of Jesus, Amen.
grace & peace,
Pastor Rebecca
