2 Corinthians 4:6 – For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness”, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (NRSV)
In this one brief verse, the apostle Paul touches on so much. He says a lot about God. He reminds us that the Creator of the universe is the same Spirit that is present within us. He proclaims that the truest reflection of God’s glory was revealed to us in the person of Jesus made the Christ.
Paul also says a lot about us. He declares that we are vessels of God’s light. He connects our heads and our hearts by noting that knowledge requires the light that comes through our hearts from God.
Light means many things to us. It is hope in the face of despair. It is life for growing things. It is a means of expressing the inner joy our faith brings us, and often, how we imagine the glory of the God we worship. Paul’s point seems to be that if this God can bring light out of the darkness of the timeless beginning, then surely this God can also shine into and through our shadowy, cracked hearts and reflect the Christ.
We can also find wisdom between the lines, in what Paul doesn’t say. If this God who is with us was present at the beginning, we can also trust that God will be with us at the end. If this Christ we worship had a face something like ours, then this light shining into our hearts could maybe make them like Christ’s heart as well.
