DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

2 Corinthians 3:17:   “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

So I was driving in the car with Tim a few days ago, and as is so often the case, my mind was wandering.  I began thinking of Gary’s sermon last week . . . and I remembered how he shared that his daughter Stephanie had attended a protest at Disneyland . . . and I remembered how he shared that music was really important to him. . . and so that naturally led me to think about protest songs from the 60’s . . . and I thought about Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan . . . and I thought about the song “Blowin In the Wind” . . . and so I turned to Tim and asked: What do you think Dylan meant in that song when he said “the answer is blowin’ in the wind…”? And Tim said: It means whatever you want it to mean!

Well, that kind of blew me away, and set my mind to pondering this question - where do we find the answers? Can we find the answers in the wind?

When I think of wind, I think of the spirit - the breath of God filling us and sustaining us. And I came to the conclusion that for  me, these words ('the answer is blowin’ in the wind') mean that through God, through the Spirit, we can find the answers (the solutions) to so many of the problems we are faced with.

Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, and how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

Learning to lean on God, learning to feel the strength of the Spirit, learning to listen to God’s breath on the wind . . . perhaps that is the answer we need.

Prayer:  Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.  Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.  Amen.
